This Monday the whole nation will celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King's birthday. It's a time when we reflect on his peaceful way of ending institutional discrimination against blacks in America. I sometimes think about what situation blacks would be in today had it not been for Dr. King. Ultimately God was the one who sustained African-Americans during those turbulent times, but it's good to know that Dr. King was courageous enough to take a stand against prejudice.

If you think about what prejudice really is, it's an attitude that states, "My race is superior to yours" or "You're not as intelligent as I am". According to the Bible however, no Christian should have this attitude towards any race. In 1 John it states that if anyone says they love God but hates his brother is a liar and the truth is not in him. During the Jim Crow era, churches all across the South were segregated. Truly Sunday morning was one of the most segregated hours in America. There were laws that prevented blacks from marrying interracially, voting, eating at food counters, etc. But because Dr. King was brave and had conviction, things changed.

The Bible also states that in Christ there is no Jew or Greek, male or female, slave or free. We are equal in His eyes. How can we feel superior to others when we needed grace and forgiveness just as they did? God doesn't call us African-American, white, Hispanic or Asian. We are simply called children of God because of our new identity in Christ.

So as we honor the legacy of Dr. King, let us put aside our biases and love each other as Christ loved us.

So very true, He was a great leader and taught all of us a great truth.
("We cannot be truly Christian people so long as we flaunt the central teachings of Jesus: brotherly love and the Golden Rule." Martin Luther King, Jr.) Thanks for sharing this. - Jay Cookingham
