Let’s be honest—most Americans don’t own any gold.
They’ve been hoodwinked, bamboozled, and flat-out fooled into putting all their trust in little green slips of paper with pictures of dead Presidents on them. These paper promises—aka dollars—are losing value faster than a cheap used car the moment you drive it off the lot.
The brilliant Austrian economist Ludwig von Mises once quipped:
“The government is the only institution that can take a valuable commodity like paper and make it worthless by applying ink.”
Funny, right? But also painfully true.
Back in the 1970s, gold was $35 an ounce. I recall a friend mentioning that the price was going to increase. I didn’t know much about gold back then—I was too young to appreciate its importance. However, later, during my junior college years, I began reading about it. The more I learned, the more I realized: gold isn’t just a shiny rock—it’s a financial lifeboat.
Here are 4 good reasons you should consider owning some gold yourself—before the rest of the country wakes up and buys it all.
1. Gold Is a Time-Tested Store of Value
Unlike dollars, gold doesn’t rust, rot, or lose value because someone in Washington decided to "stimulate the economy" with more printed money.
If you buried a $100 bill and a gold coin in your backyard and dug them up 30 years later, guess which one would still be worth something? That’s right—the shiny one.
Since the Federal Reserve was created in 1913, the dollar has lost about 98–99% of its purchasing power. That means something that cost $1 back then now costs about $25 or more. Meanwhile, an ounce of gold has gone from $20 to over $2,300—and counting.
An ounce of gold in 1900 could buy a fine suit. And guess what? It still can. That’s the definition of holding value.
Gold doesn’t rely on government promises, interest rates, or market trends. It’s real wealth you can hold in your hand—no batteries or Wi-Fi required.
2. Gold Is a Hedge Against Inflation (And Washington Foolishness)
Let’s face it—prices are going up, and the folks in charge don’t seem too worried about it. But you should be.
Inflation means your money buys less every year. And when it gets out of control—as it did in the 1970s—gold tends to skyrocket. During that decade of disco balls and gas lines, gold exploded from $35 an ounce to over $800. That’s a 2,000% increase while the dollar was gasping for air.
Today’s inflation isn’t just higher prices—it’s the result of trillions of dollars being printed out of thin air. Tariffs, supply chain issues, and government overspending are all contributing to what economists politely call “cost-push inflation.”
Translation: everything costs more, and your paycheck buys less.
But here’s the silver lining (or in this case, golden): when inflation rises, so does gold. It’s like financial bug spray for the economic mosquitoes eating away at your wealth.
3. The Smart Money (Central Banks) Are Buying Gold Like It’s 1979
When your neighbor buys gold, that’s one thing. But when central banks—the institutions that control nations’ money—start stockpiling gold, you better pay attention.
Since around 2022, countries like China, India, and Russia have been quietly buying gold by the ton. They're not doing this because it looks pretty in a vault. They’re doing it because they know fiat currencies (like the dollar) are at risk, and gold doesn’t play by the same rules.
When big players continue to buy, they create a natural price floor. So, even when gold dips, the underlying demand supports it. And if regular investors start piling in too, prices can explode.
It’s no longer just about jewelry or tradition—this is a strategic move by governments who see what's coming.
If gold is good enough for them, maybe it’s good enough for the rest of us.
4. Gold Is a “Non-Correlated Diversifier” (Don’t Worry, I’ll Explain)
I know, that sounds like something a Wall Street guy says to sound smart. But it’s simple.
A non-correlated diversifier is just a fancy way of saying, “This thing doesn’t crash when everything else crashes.”
When the stock market falls, your 401(k) might take a dive, your bonds might sink, and your crypto might vanish like a magician’s rabbit. But gold? Gold dances to the beat of its own drum.
It doesn’t move with the stock market. It doesn’t follow the real estate market. It doesn’t care who wins the election or what interest rates are.
Gold just sits there—solid, reliable, unbothered.
Think of your investments like legs on a table. If all your legs are made of stocks and one breaks, down goes the table. But if one leg is made of gold, something that behaves differently, it helps keep the whole thing standing.
That’s the power of true diversification.
How Much Gold Should You Own?
You don’t need to go all in, but even a little can go a long way. Some people allocate 10% of their portfolio to gold. Others go higher, especially if they’re concerned about inflation or global chaos.
Gold isn’t about getting rich quickly. It’s about not going broke slowly.
Final Thought: It’s Not Too Late—But It’s Getting Close
Gold isn’t just for kings, pirates, or conspiracy theorists. It’s for regular people who want to protect what they’ve earned and sleep better at night.
If you’ve never owned gold before, maybe it’s time to rethink that. Because the next time you look at that piece of paper with a dead President’s face on it, you might ask yourself: "Is this real money… or just a promise?"
Get some gold before everyone else wakes up.
