A Call to Modesty In An Age of Immodesty

Brethren, we live in a time when darkness is paraded as light, and what once brought shame is now celebrated. Social media platforms like X (formerly Twitter), Facebook, Instagram, and others have become battlegrounds for the soul. Daily, we are confronted with immodest and indecent images—pictures that should never have been posted, let alone praised. Tragically, many of these images are shared not by strangers in the world only, but by those who claim the name of Christ.

The apostle Paul warned us plainly in 1 Timothy 2:9, “In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety...” And again, Peter exhorted women not to let their adorning be outward only—braided hair, gold, or costly array—but rather the hidden man of the heart (1 Peter 3:3-4).

These were not optional cultural preferences—they were divine instructions given to preserve holiness among God’s people.

Yet today, immodesty is not confined to the streets or the pages of worldly magazines—it walks boldly into our schools and even into the house of God. Young women and men are dressing in ways that provoke lust rather than purity, and our silence has made us complicit. Have we forgotten the words of our Lord? “Whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart” (Matthew 5:28).

Brothers and sisters, we are called to be separate from the world. Romans 12:2 declares, “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind…” The images we post, the way we dress, and the things we promote must reflect the holiness of the One who called us out of darkness into His marvelous light (1 Peter 2:9).

Let us not dress to be seen by men, but to be approved by God. Let us not lead others into temptation by our lack of discretion, but rather “walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise” (Ephesians 5:15).

Beloved, repent of vanity. Delete the pictures. Dress with dignity. Honor the Lord in body and spirit, which are His (1 Corinthians 6:20). For we are not our own—we are bought with a price. Let us glorify God in all things, including how we present ourselves both online and in person.
