During the night I fell. I was up for I couldn’t sleep. My day had been taxing. Too little sleep for too many days was taking its toll on my weary body; coupled with ongoing health issues that after just 15 minutes at best, force me to stop even normal tasks needed so I can rest for an hour or two before tackling things again, I felt discouraged.
When I sat down wrong, tilting my chair, I was primed to hit the floor. As I fell sideways, I saw my face heading for my bookcase. More trouble was coming! The next thing I knew, my bad shoulder was hurting from hitting the edge of our brick hearth, while my head was tucked toward my chest, just missing the bookshelf.
Thinking, “This too!” I felt the tears beginning to well, as I struggled to get up from the floor. Natural self-pity began to rise with them. Ready to give in and let them flow, I had this faint thought: “You’re OK, only shaken. Nothing is broken, no serious injury. I need to thank God for protecting me!”
As soon as I did, the welling tears never had a chance to flow for the self-pity was being replaced with a rising thankfulness for the one who had protected me. I was still tired, but not nearly as discouraged, knowing all would be OK.
In looking back, I can see how easy it is for us to miss the voice of God’s guiding spirit as we’re troubled with circumstances out of our control, for we understandably expect God to speak loud enough during our trying times that we can hear Him through our din of turmoil. But He doesn’t always work that way, otherwise we would not be learning how to be faithfully listening for His loving words of guidance, of comfort, of wisdom … whatever we need when He speaks them.
Be encouraged my friends. Listen for His still, small voice. (cf I Kings 19:11-12)
