Through the Eyes of a Child

Seeing through the eyes of a child is like stepping outside the box. Sometimes what we see is most obvious blinds our perception of what the most obvious is. As adults our minds have been tainted with the world’s views and somehow as we get older our grasp of stepping outside the box slowly diminishes. I know for myself, I get caught up in the way things should look or the way things are instead of looking at the possibilities.
When my box gets too small and I need to step out, I reflect on the summer my son spent with his beloved frogs. The minute the backpack came off he headed down towards the creek looking for his new found friends. He would spend hours catching them, naming them and making homes for the brownish green creatures. I often dreaded the mess as he stomped in the house with his shoes covered in mud but to a ten year old boy he was having the time of his life. Carefully placing them in their new home furnished with all the amenities any frog could want. The white, plastic bucket was gently put together with love and care providing only the best for his frogs. I ventured out to look at his so called home for dear old froggie and noticed the obvious things such as, grass, rocks, and of course mud. Or was it? I carefully explained to my son that dog poop was not something you should feed your frogs. He replied, “Mom, dog poop attracts flies and frogs eat flies.” I just smiled, as my eyes were opened to what was most obvious to this child of mine.

When your box gets cramped and too dark to see,
look through the eyes of a child and see the possibilities.
