                   What Is God’s Name?
                   By Robert Schaetzle

Think about this should some stranger, or one of your preschool children ask you this question. How would answer?

Moses was commissioned by God to go, take the Nation of Israel from Egypt to the Promised Land.  God’s promise to Abraham, when Israel settled in the Land of Goshen in Egypt 430 years later.

Moses was commissioned by God to bring Israel from Egypt to God’s ‘Land of milk and honey.’

Then Moses said to God, “If I come to the people of Israel and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ what shall I say to them?”  God said to Moses, “I am who I am.” And he said, “Say this to the people of Israel, ‘I am has sent me to you.’” Exodus 3:13-14 RSV

Through God’s Covenant of Redemption, we recognize this to be above all else, Yahweh, ‘He that is,’ and always has been! Just as God was with Moses, so he abides in each follower of our Redeemer Emanual, God with us.

There is great comfort and promise, wherever we go, or whatever circumstance we might be dealing with today. That “I AM” abides and leads! The Apostle Paul reminds us: ‘Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you?’

Not to be defined as universalism, believing our Creator lives in rocks and trees to worship them. We come to faith accepting Jesus as Emmanual. We are given the third person of our triune Creator to live in us, God’s Holy Spirit. We can hear the Spirit’s voice,  much like when Yahweh talked with Moses, to bring the people out of bondage, under Pharaoh from Egypt.

Father, thank you for your abiding presence living in us as followers of Jesus. Help us recognize the voice of “I AM” talking to us, as you talked to Moses leading Israel from Egypt. Amen
