The Benefits of DMSO

What Is DMSO?

You may know dimethyl sulfoxide, or DMSO, as a remedy for joint pain and inflammation. Naturally occurring in trace amounts in some foods, DMSO is produced synthetically for widespread use as an industrial solvent and scientific reagent due to its effectiveness in dissolving organic compounds.

In medicine, DMSO is approved by the FDA as a topical pain reliever and anti-inflammatory, specifically for interstitial cystitis (bladder pain syndrome). It also serves as a cryoprotectant, helping prevent cellular damage during freezing processes. Research shows that DMSO’s effect varies depending on its concentration, making it beneficial and potentially harmful depending on dose and duration.

Building Cellular Resilience

DMSO encourages cells to build resilience by activating cellular stress responses at low or moderate levels. However, high doses can disrupt cellular growth or cause toxicity. Studies in yeast indicate that DMSO stimulates stress-response genes without harming cellular membranes at these levels, preparing cells to withstand future challenges. This reaction is similar to how short-term exercise stress strengthens the body.

However, DMSO’s impact shifts at higher doses, impairing cell division and increasing toxic effects. Cells that rely on oxygen (aerobic respiration) appear more vulnerable to DMSO’s harmful effects, likely because it disrupts mitochondrial stability, resulting in reactive oxygen species (ROS) production.

Potential as a Cancer-Fighting Agent

Emerging research indicates DMSO’s potential in fighting cancer. Testing on leukemia and epithelial cancer cells showed that DMSO could significantly reduce cell growth, intensifying effects at higher doses and longer exposure times. In some cases, DMSO killed up to 69% of cancer cells within 72 hours, suggesting it may slow cancer progression.

Further investigation revealed that DMSO disrupts cancer cells by reducing proteins (CDK2 and cyclin A) essential for cell division. DMSO’s effects align with apoptosis (programmed cell death), suggesting that it triggers cancer cells’ self-destruct mechanisms through the extrinsic, or non-mitochondrial, pathway.

Alzheimer’s Research: Visual Function and Neuroprotection

While early studies raised concerns about DMSO affecting eye health, recent research shows that low-dose DMSO may improve visual function. In a study on Alzheimer’s-prone mice, DMSO improved contrast sensitivity, similar to Alzheimer’s treatments. This improvement suggests that DMSO’s antioxidant properties might counter oxidative stress, a factor in Alzheimer’s progression, and possibly slow disease development.

Benefits Beyond Alzheimer’s: Joint Health and Antibacterial Effects

The benefits of DMSO extend beyond neuroprotection. As a precursor to MSM, DMSO could support joint health, particularly for knee pain, through its anti-inflammatory properties. DMSO also has antibacterial capabilities, effectively inhibiting the growth of multiple bacteria strains at low concentrations.

Caution, Dosage, and Side Effects

While DMSO has many potential benefits, it must be used carefully. Common side effects include skin irritation and a garlic-like odor, and it increases the absorption of other substances through the skin, which can affect medications like blood thinners. High doses may lead to liver damage, so those with liver conditions and pregnant women should avoid it or consult a healthcare provider.

To minimize skin irritation, start with a diluted 70% DMSO solution mixed 50/50 with water and gradually increase as tolerated. For oral doses, begin with a small amount (0.5 to 1 teaspoon of 70% or 100% DMSO) and gradually increase, with 3 teaspoons being the general upper limit. Due to its taste, mixing it with milk or juice can make it more palatable.

In summary, DMSO shows great promise but should be part of a balanced health approach, including a nutritious diet, exercise, and stress management. Under professional guidance, DMSO’s antioxidant, neuroprotective, anticancer, and anti-inflammatory effects may support overall health.
