A large herd of pigs was feeding there on the hillside. The demons begged Jesus to let them go into the pigs, and he gave them permission. When the demons came out of the man, they went into the pigs, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and was drowned. Luke 8:32-33 NIV

Let me say to begin, that the bible does not provide answers as to why to the following questions. What I provide here is speculative responses provided by others. First, why did the demons ask to be allowed to go into the herd of pigs? Demons do not like to be out in the open. They like to hide, especially within humans. If they are being cast out of humans, where could they go? A herd of pigs was near. Pigs were considered to be dirty animals. Obviously, the demons were dirty. Also, Jews considered pigs to be unclean. Maybe this herd of pigs was even owned by a Jewish person. Also, these demons had lived in this man for a long time, and they did not wish to leave the area with which they were familiar. Again, this all is speculative.
