Never Despise Your Humble Beginnings

“Do not despise these small beginnings, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin…” (Zech. 4:10).

Our most recent mother and son dedicated time was on the 28th May 2024. On his way home, that day, he bought me flowers! I would say what they were but I am not good with the names of flowers (except for marigolds and roses). There were red roses and some yellow flowers.

I left them in the vase overnight and made up a bouquet the following day. I took a picture of that bouquet which was my previous profile picture [on Facebook].

I thought about his early years of picking and bringing to me daisies from the back garden. Had I refused those daisies from him, it may have taught him a lesson I hadn't intended on teaching. The lesson would be that I didn't appreciate flowers or gifts from him. That would have been so far from the truth.

As a toddler, he didn't have the concept of buying a gift to show his appreciation but he had a giving heart and he would stoop to pick a daisy or two for his Mommy. It would always bring a smile to my face. Each time I reflect on those days and how they would beautify my hair or the shirt/top I was wearing, it touched my heart.

Wherever I see daisies, I am reminded of the early years of parenting and I am thankful to God for the privilege of being a mother.

So, upon finding these pictures*, I wanted to use them to encourage mothers (or aunties and grandmothers) today. If you're a mother of young children, may I encourage you to accept daisies, the imperfect drawing of you or their favourite inanimate object, something they made from objects around the house, or words in the form of a letter or poem, even with incorrect spellings and grammar? It is their way of saying, "I love you and appreciate all that you do for me."

They will grow up and daisies may transfer to roses, like they did for me last month. Their gift of artwork may transfer to a visit to the art museum or a front row seat to their own art show. Our children are a gift to us and when we see our parenting role as a vocation, we can see and extract the beauty within each interaction.

Therefore, my encouragement to you today is to never despise your humble beginnings.

A gift is a gift, no matter how small! Even if it’s a flower from a weed, I believe it should be received with gratitude, as it comes from the pure motive of a child’s heart.

They are learning a valuable lesson of giving, when you accept that gift. You are also teaching them the art of gratitude when you thank them for that gift and show that gratitude with the sharing of a smile and a hug.

Happy parenting!
