Your Word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path [Psalm 119v105]. These were the expressions of King David, A lover of God's Word, a Shepherd boy and the last of Jesse's sons. He was not considered, like his other brothers, a warrior of good looks and physical stature, but from humble beginnings, David became the second ruler of Israel and Judah.
Those lonesome years in the field transformed him from a shepherd tending his father folk into God's Chosen shepherd to rule a United Kingdom. While God was preparing him practically, He also built him spiritually with the intimate times they shared.
Throughout the book of Psalms, King David showed a sincere, genuine love and commitment to the Word of God.
Humble, open and transparent, King David begins the chapter of Psalm 119 with, 'Blessed are those whose ways are blameless who walk in the law of the [Almighty] God [Psalm 119v1].
King David was not afraid to confess his wrongdoing and repent. Throughout the chapter, he admits, challenges, encourages and openly pours out his heart to Yehovah God. In verse 67, he confesses that he went astray and was afflicted. However, rather than complaining, in verse 71, he embraces his pain by saying, 'My suffering was good for me, for it taught me to pay attention to your decrees [in other words, to your Torah].
Whose voice and expressions are we listening to to continue on the path of righteousness? What are we allowing our eyes, the window to our soul, to gaze at in keeping our thoughts pure? In verse 9 of the said chapter, King David asks, 'How can a young man stay on the path of purity?' He answers, 'by living according to your Word.' Throughout generations, God hasn't changed or watered down His Word. We can acknowledge the Apostle Paul in Philippians 4v8 (NTL), emphasizing more descriptively the same point in keeping our minds steadfast and pure.
We can certainly walk in assurance like King David making the affirmation that God's Word is a Lamp to our feet and a Light to our path, when we commit ourselves to living by God's Word.
