Straight Paths

Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him and He will make your paths straight. Proverbs 3:5-6 (NASB)

Did you ever wonder why long distance highways sometimes curve instead of going straight?  After all, logically you’d think that a straight road would be easier to construct with no curves, but sometimes it’s just not practical.

When building a highway, designers may plan a straight route, but obstacles prevent them doing that. Perhaps there’s a hill in the way but leveling the elevation is not practical or economical so the highway must curve to avoid such an obstacle. Or maybe there’s a body of water along the planned route and if it can’t be drained the road must curve around it. And finally, if there’s a dispute about title to the property where the road is supposed to go then again a curve might be the way to handle it. In short, if there’s an obstacle in the highway then the designers must be aware of it and then do what they need to get around it to complete the road.

Many times I find it can be the same as I follow God’s plan for me on my spiritual journey and I encounter obstacles in my way.  It might be a sudden difficulty of some sort that means either a pause or change in my service for him. I might personally experience the obstacles or maybe they remain invisible to me but not to God. So then in various ways he has to remove the obstacle or re-route me so I can continue to serve him. So what should do when this occurs? I know I must learn to trust him to handle it all and know that even if I’m not aware of it, he clears my way.

After all, according to the Psalmist, the Lord makes sure we have a straight path so we can continue to serve him. For our benefit and his glory.
