Jesus is asking why are you fearful?

There are times we react like the disciples did when faced with a storm in the gospel of Matthew 8:23-27

He was not condemning his disciples. Jesus was asking why are you fearful when you have no reason to be.
I am here with you.

Jesus expects us to remain confident in him no matter the situation we are in or we encounter.

What was Jesus implying to his disciples?
He was implying that based on their knowledge of him, who he is, the things they saw him do, the supernatural power he demonstrated over sickness, diseases and demons they should not be afraid because he is with them.

When Jesus rebuked the storm his disciples wondered what manner of man he is. He is unlike others. Even the winds and sea obey him.

Jesus is the one who gives us hope.
This hope that Jesus gives keeps us alive. Fear paralyzes, it clouds our judgement and makes us weary, this weariness causes us to faint. When we faint it hinders our ability to reap the fruits of our labour.

What does Jesus require of us?
He wants us to trust him
Trusting involves surrendering

As disciples of Christ; although Jesus is not here physically with us, we have his inspired words recorded in the bible and his presence in the person of the Holy Spirit indwelling us.

The apostle John in 1 John 4:4 tells us that greater is he; the Holy Spirit who dwells within us than he who is in this world. The Holy Spirit is our comforter and helper.

Even with this knowledge we still become fearful at times.
Many times we struggle to trust. This happens when we encounter challenges beyond our strength and we focus on our inabilities than on Christ’s power.

Heavenly Father, help us we do not want to have a casual familiarity with your spirit, we desire to surrender our wills so we can experience deeper fellowship with you. Then we can live in confidence, walk in faith and not by sight.

We want to declare in faith like the psalmist:
“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea “ Psalm 46:1-2

There are times we feel overwhelmed and fearful even after making declarations.
Let us not be ashamed.
Let us not freeze and our faith be paralyzed but press on and confess like the psalmist.
“Whenever I am afraid. I will trust in you.” Psalm 56: 3
