“For out of the heart come evil thoughts—murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander. These are what defile a person; but eating with unwashed hands does not defile them.” Matthew 15:19-20 NIV
That which defiles is not that which is taken into a person but is what comes out of the heart. The Pharisee leaders were not able to see this truth. They believed that they were good on the inside but could not see that their blindness kept them from seeing the need for Messiah. For from the heart comes forth that which is sinful. Man is sinful by nature. We need someone to save us from ourselves. That someone is Jesus Christ.
