The old man stands by silent,
Tries to hold up for his wife.
In disbelief his head is shaking,
As tears are swelling in his eyes.

Standing at the window gazing,
Soft baffled hurting sighs.
It’s all that he can do now,
To not break down and cry.

In the bedroom a sobbing mother,
Clutched a picture to her cheek.
Two soldiers walk out Slowly,
Check the name off of their sheet.

The man stares into nothing,
While waves of anger pierce his soul.
Clinching fists, suppressed emotion,
Still he does not let them show.

The mother’s memories on her baby,
When she could keep him safe in arms.
Brings her up through days of childhood,
To a young man full of charm.

The old man sees them play together,
Run for balls, which had been thrown.
Sitting at the river fishing,
Choking back his tears he moans.

The mother hears him whisper,
“Mom I love you, it wont be long.”
She pulls the picture tighter crying,
Her son will not be coming home.

At the grave it’s softly raining,
A flag drapes ore the caskets top.
We here the news of soldiers dieing,
To some it’s just a passing thought.

To many it has deeper meaning,
Freedoms debt bought with a gun.
In truth we all should stand by weeping,
For that’s our treasure and our son.

To give yourself in foreign countries,
Because you love this way of life,
To leave behind a mother weeping,
A father or a mourning wife.

Dressed in black displays the hurting,
For this young man who was lost.
My conscience wrestles with this madness,
And still no answers have I got.

Many empty chairs this Christmas,
Sits across our countries plains.
While many families enjoy this holiday,
They’ll be many baptized with pain.

While many have their families round them,
Many family’s sobs in tears.
I can’t smile this Christmas season,
War makes it not a smiling year.

Another absolutely beautiful one....so touching!

William, this is so touching. It grips my heart so tightly. I just remember my neice being called out for those eight months, her husband and two little babies here, (one of them not old enough to remember her) and the prayers that constantly went up for her. Her homecoming was not some huge celebration. It was with humble thanksgiving and remembrance of those less fortunate that we embraced her... and that we still embrace her, even today. P.S. This piece is more than worthy of error correction. Peace and much love to you.

William, you are so right! And the whole thing boggles my mind. I struggle with believing that we can bring peace in a land that has never been peaceful. I pray for our President that he will do what is right and if what is being done is not "right", that he will be man enough to pull our men and women out of there.
God help us all, and God help and protect our men and women in Iraq and all other countries!
