"Marriage should be honoured by all…" (Heb.13:4).
This passage speaks volumes to me because:
1) I was born out of wedlock and grew up without direct parental guidance. That made it difficult for me to leap into adulthood secured in who I am. It also gave me an incomplete understanding of love and the character of God.
2) I grew up a fatherless child, though I had the potential of being fathered by five different men. This passage was meant to protect me from the many challenges I faced growing up. The feeling of rejection that haunts me from being abandoned is what living out this passage would have protected me from.
3) I am a married woman. This passage teaches me, bringing understanding as to why marriage should be honoured by all. It is through the challenges faced within my marriage comes the understanding and appreciation of the instruction given to honour marriage.
4) I am the mother of a son. This passage has helped with the training and continues to teach him in preparation for his adult years. It is a warning to my husband and I, as parents, to be an example to our son, so he will mature in understanding of what it means to honour marriage, whether he remains single or he gets married.
'Marriage should be honoured by all,' is a phrase that caused me to think about my journey to birth; throughout my childhood; and into adulthood, before I even began looking at it from within my own marriage.
There are so many ways a young man or young woman can dishonour marriage when he or she is unaware. For the purpose of this article, I will focus on the young man.
Without learning from his father how to treat a young lady, he can dishonour her parents' marriage by defiling that young girl's body. In so doing, he is also dishonouring her future husband since she is not his wife. Just by that one act, dishonour would come to at least 2 marriages, three if he leaves her pregnant. That child would have been conceived in sin, born out of wedlock and may grow up without a father or a father-figure in their life. He or she, without guidance, may grow up and repeat that cycle.
What decision can you make today, to add value to marriage?
How can you pre-decide what you will do when next you are tempted to dishonour a marriage?
Are you a single person who speaks ill of marriage or married couples?
If so, would it help to think about the good that comes from children being brought up in a loving, caring home where they can thrive and grow up to be healthy individuals who make a positive contribution to our society?
Would that help to renew your mind?
Do you have parents who are married?
Can you celebrate their marriage and see the good that came from their union?
Could this marriage week be the start of something new in your thought process and in your life? If you choose to allow the Holy Spirit to renew your mind, you will be able to begin to give thanks for the institution of marriage which God designed to display His love towards mankind.
We may not all be married, but we all came through the act that was designed to be contained within the institution of marriage. For that reason alone, I personally, will continue to celebrate the institution of marriage.
Marriage is a gift from God.
Sex is a gift to married couples.
The fact that we have taken the parts of marriage we like and discarded the parts meant to protect us from the confusion we now experience in society, does not mean that marriage has been redefined. It simply means that we've forfeited the blessing that comes with marriage by choosing to accept the privileges of marriage, without the obligation and commitment that comes with a covenant marriage.
God’s Word [the Bible] says, Marriage is to be honoured by all. How will you choose to honour yours and the marriages of others moving forward?
Happy Marriage Week!
