It can be quite daunting;
When your car is due for an MOT test;
Will your car achieve that pass;
Or will it fail and cause you stress?

As a couple, we wanted to pass each test;
So, we established regular 'date nights';
To keep the relationship thriving;
Taking our marriage to higher heights.

We found that making time for each other;
Was vital to the health of our marriage;
Without spending quality time together;
It would have caused serious damage.

So, to help us on our marital journey;
We used numerous resources;
From books, podcasts, YouTube clips;
Articles, sermons, and short courses.

Dear friends,

In 2018 Marriage Week UK decided to celebrate Marriage Week in May, instead of February. This was to distinguish Marriage Week from Valentine’s Day. This year, 2022, we’ve celebrated the last Marriage Week in May. In 2023 we will be celebrating in February again.

Vince and I got talking about cars as we’ve not had a car since December 2021. We had an interesting discussion around the acronym M.O.T. and wanted to write a poem from lessons learned from learning about cars, to commemorate Marriage Week 2022.

We always thought the test was called MOT and that the ‘T’ stood for test. So, I asked: What does the letters ‘M’ and ‘O’ stand for? He didn’t know either. So, we researched and found out that MOT simply stood for Ministry of Transport. It made little sense at the time, how we could be taking our car to the mechanic, each year to have a ‘Ministry of Transport’ (MOT) done. Then it dawned on me:

“So, each year we take the car to the mechanic, we are actually doing a test to satisfy the Ministry of Transport that our car is road worthy.”

Then I got thinking about marriage:

“So, who are we accountable to with our marriage? Who ensures our marriage is on target?”
