For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope. (Jeremiah 29:11 (NKJV)
“Hey, look at this!” My young friend Loretta came by my office to show me a real estate ad from a local newspaper. It was for the upscale home I knew her affluent family was selling.
I read the ad that ended with “..five bedrooms, four baths, sauna, quarters.”
“What’s ‘quarters’?” Loretta asked.
I tried to explain. “That’s a real estate term for a bedroom and bathroom for a live in housekeeper.”
Loretta nodded. “We have that off the kitchen. It was where my nanny stayed years ago. But we use it for storage now.”
“Well, your agent probably saw that and knew what it could be and so worded the ad that way.” I explained.
After Loretta left with her newspaper, I had a chance to think about our conversation and recognized an unexpected meaning for my spiritual journey. I realized that just like Loretta’s agent saw how an ordinary store room had promise for a better use I don’t think that way. In fact my problem is that I tend to wonder if I’m too ordinary to be of much use to God. Also of course too often I forget that if God’s plan for me includes a special task then logically he will provide what I need to accomplish it.
Our Scripture assures us that God has wonderful plans for us, and all he asks of us is that we trust him for everything. And when we do then as we serve him there’s no way we can feel ordinary!
