The church has to decide which way it wants to go. Keep the status quo—remain a retreat from the big bad world— or become a launch pad.

God surely wants the latter. We are saved to save others. Not to sit and confer and count our blessings. We are to be the launch pad for Rocketship Gospel that will zoom outwards through the church walls. The local church is Cape Canaveral, with (hopefully) the Holy Spirit as C-in-C and the pastor as Operations Director.

At present, generally speaking we are in a holy huddle, the rocket is still sitting on the launch pad. Our activities mean nothing to the world outside. What we do within church walls doesn’t affect the eternal future of non-believers. Yet when we fire that rocket, take the gospel outside and they are born again, they’ll want to join us. They will be different.

As the rocket reaches target, folks will be released from bondage— sin, drugs, alcohol, materialism, whatever. We’ll have a new generation. The “new-believers” will be with us. People who’ll want to tell the world about Jesus, and so we will have a revolution in Christian thinking and attitude. Some will have the temerity to start new churches— non-denominational they may be, and thank God in advance for that!

Right now it seems Christians in general have short memories of life before salvation. We were all lost sinners yet we talk about “the world” as though we were never part of it. Millions more need to experience the great salvation we have, and it is our job with God’s help to fire that rocket.

Oh, we are thinking about the rocket. There’ll have to be a national conference of course. Then a few seminars to decide is it really necessary. Then committee meetings. “Well, it isn’t really the trendy and ‘in thing,’ you know. After all, no-one is doing that nowadays.” Some pastors might even preach on the need for the rocket, but it has to go beyond mere words.

God has prepared our Cape Canaveral. The technicians are briefed through the Bible. The promises of a successful launch are there too. The destination is known—Planet Unsaved. We await the hierarchy to order the lift-off. It’s sputtering a little now, but the world is waiting for Rocketship Gospel to roar into action and be fully launched. So is God.
