The boy watched as new neighbors moved in,
a little red headed girl catching his eye.
Right then, he knew her heart, he had to win;
that day,a love was born that would never die.

He agreed to walk her to school from that day on.
Holding her hand while crossing the street.
A friendship lasting after school years were gone,
becoming a promise of love when two hearts meet.

He promised her he would always hold her hand,
"saying trust me, I will never let it go.
I love you, and you must always understand;
as the years pass, my love for you will only grow.

One starry night later, he gave her a ring.
Just a simple, gold wedding band.
Together, weathering the storms that life brings;
as promised, never letting go of her hand.

They told everyone that they knew,
they would go to Heaven hand in hand.
If God wanted one, He had to take the other too.
Apart, neither one could make a stand.

As time spiraled, her health began to fade.
Her doctors gave him little hope or choice.
All hope was gone and the decision made.
In the end, he had no voice.

He went to see her in the home every day.
Read the Bible and held her hand in prayer.
He was there by her side, come what may;
although sometimes, she didn't know he was there.

Going one more time, moving slower each day.
Not quite feeling himself up to par.
He tried to keep out of the nurse's way,
as she left his wife's door ajar.

She opened her eyes and sought his hand,
and he grabbed it for all he was worth.
A promise kept, as had been their plan;
joining hands together, they left this earth.
