Last night I dreamt of you again.
You stared at me across a crowded room,
Trying to get my attention.
I pretended not to notice,
Smiling secretively, I kept my eyes averted,
Playing hard to get.
I felt you move across the room towards me.
I turned and our eyes met.
Neither of us spoke,
No words were needed.
For one brief, shining moment,
We were young again.
Filled with vitality,
Freed from the constraints of this world,
Deeply in love.
You touched my hand,
And then you turned and left.
You flew across the land as though your feet had wings.
I tried to follow, but my legs were heavy,
My feet like lead.
And then, like mist in the morning sunshine,
You disappeared.
I awakened to find myself old and alone,
My face wet with tears.
Someday I will be young again,
Just like you are now.
Someday my leaden limbs will be light and swift,
Like those of a mountain deer.
Someday we will hold hands again,
Not for a fleeting instant, but for all eternity.
But for now, I must face another day without you.
For now, I must carry on as best I can.
For now, the memories are all I have.
They are precious and I will treasure them.
For now.
