Understanding Blessings

God gave His only begotten Son so that we may give of ourselves, not only to Him but to others.  God’s Grace is evidenced by our reaction to His invitation.  Some of the greatest blessings in life are learning to give from the abundance of blessings that we have received from God.  Giving is living the Gospel.  Living is giving the Gospel.  Blessings are not a one-way experience.  Many want to be blessed, instead of wanting to be a blessing.  “Bless me Lord” has been a cry of Christians for generations.  Every Believer has been blessed to an overflowing abundance.  The problem is that many identify the blessings as a limited and incomplete experience.  Soon the emotional experience of being blessed fades away and there is a need to request more blessings.  Churches that extend “altar calls” for those who need a blessing will find their altars filled with petitioners.   Some churches call for revival meetings semi-yearly, hoping to rekindle the blessings of old.

For a blessing to become a reality there must be not only an acceptance of God’s offer but an outlet by which the blessing is materialized into social action.  Some of the greatest blessings in my life have been through being a blessing to someone.  My blessing “jar” has overflowed countless times because I sought to bless others as the Lord has blessed me.  I believe that spiritual depression is directly related to failing to tie God’s blessings to our expression of those blessings.  The more self-centered we become, the slower the flow of His blessings.  When we become “other-centered” the blessings flow like a river.

It is not a question of what God can do for me, but what I can do for others through the blessings He has given me.  The more we reach out, the greater the blessings.  Have you ever come to the place where you were so overcome by blessings that you asked God to hold off blessing you until you catch your breath? 

Blessings are not to be stored but shared.  Blessings move Christians from a spectator to a participant in the Kingdom of God.  Blessings confirm our obedience to the Word of God.  Blessings are God’s confirmation that we are His disciples.  Jesus confirmed that the words that He spoke were not His own but He spoke as He was directed. (John 12:49)   As a result of His obedience the blessings flowed upon Him.  When will we realize that blessings come through speaking and demonstrating the Word? 

If we are looking to be blessed by just confessing our belief in our Lord and Savior, we will limit our ability to be abundantly blessed.  If we are using our blessings to exhibit our Faith, the blessing spigot will never run dry.

May every Christian ask the Lord to make them a blessing, not only to Him but to others.
