SLUGGARD'S EMBLEM

 “Go to the ants, you sluggard Consider her ways and be wise where having not captain overseer or ruler, provides her supplies in the summer, and gathers her food in the harvest” proverb 6: 6-8          

The instruction or advice was directed toward some set of people who have the habit of being unwilling to work or do not use their energy, abilities, gifts, resources and time effectively. The meaning of laziness is deeper than the attitude of abstaining from work. Laziness is a territory, kingdom and a dungeon, enslaving many gifts, talents, potential, innovations and inventions.  Its sign post are camouflage in nature: bold or subtle. laziness can run through an ideology, philosophies and traditions. When laziness is embellished with pride or anger, so dangerous it is.  Some embrace laziness because of the lack of inward motivation to work, distraction by pleasure or depression, discouragement and envious of another people’s success.

 It should be noted that diligent soul can be stressed or tired out, wisdom demand for relaxation. However, if a person relaxation has no boundary, he or she is lazy and need to heed the advice of king Solomon, “Go to the ants”! Some really work but not with required speed, responses and sense of responsibility. Such act is still within the domain of laziness and it will not be blessed with required outcome.

How long will you slumber, o sluggard? When will you rise from your sleep? A little sleep, a little slumber. A little folding of the hands to sleep so shall your poverty come on you like a prowler and your need like an armed man pro. 6: 6-11

 These were the advice of Solomon to the indolent souls, after two separate questions were raised. These two questions bother on “time”.  This focus on time will help define who a sluggard is. Anyone or group of people have no or little regard for time, engage in any act and activities that waste the opportunity of time is a lazy person; this is irrespective of the level of advancement.  It is a potential disaster to join the group of the lazy people. There is no hope of fulfilment in slothfulness?  There is no provision made for idleness. A lazy man is a cursed soul on earth.
