He trudges on, blackened by the horrors 
He has encountered. 
His mind is trained, grilled
To kill the enemy.
He has to block all emotions, 
He has a job to do,
He does it well..
Take out that sniper!
Bombs exploding around  him.
He watches, as his brothers in arms
Are blown to pieces.
The heat is relentless, 
He wants to remove his helmet,
As the sweat soaks his face.
Grime is embedded in his fingernails,
But he is alert!
If he switches off for one second,
He will become the next corpse!
Tanks climb over rocky terrain,
Defending their land, their people.
The smell of burning bodies is acrid.

He remembers....

Back in Civvy Street, a new job,
Back to the hearth of his family,
He is now home.

With his medals.

At night, the terrors wake
Him in cold sweats!
He cries out, longing for comfort. 
His mind is scarred, the
Images replay over and over,
Nightmares become 
A regular occurrence, 
He's no longer himself, because 

He remembers.....
