“It’s that newspaper guy again,” the pastor’s secretary told the pastor and he picked up the phone. The editor’s voice sounded bored. “We got your column, but there wasn’t a title.”

The pastor paused to think. No title? Well, possibly it was because he was so busy with his sermon he didn’t check when he submitted.

He found the column among his papers and turned back to the phone. “The column title is ‘The Lord is My Shepherd’” He told the editor and was about to hang up when the man‘s still bored voice caught his ear. “Okay, we have ‘The Lord Is my shepherd. Is that all?”

For just a split second the pastor’s frustration found a voice.”Yes – ‘The Lord is My Shepherd’ That’s enough!” he barked into the receiver and hung up.

He immediately regretted his outburst, but decided to leave it in the past. However, it didn’t stay there as the column was published under the title “The Lord Is My Shepherd – That’s Enough!”

Amusingly awkward, yet also entirely correct.

Christ called himself the Good Shepherd, comparing himself to a familiar agricultural image. After all, his audience was well acquainted with shepherds and how they guided and provided all their flock needed. And just as a perfect human shepherd provides the sheep everything needed, so does God do the same for us. Even the provision of his own life to assure our salvation.

So with the Lord was our perfect shepherd, then what else do we need? Nothing! And that’s definitely enough!
