My family and I attended a service yesterday and while the minister said some good things about faith, I felt that he put too much emphasis on financial gain. He urged the members to believe God for not only one business but two, not an average car but a luxury one, not an average neighborhood but an affluent one. This kind of teaching is detrimental to many Christians because they may think that they're less spiritual and not really blessed by God because they don't have the finest things in life.

Prosperity teaching is the opposite of what God's Word says. In 2 Timothy it speaks against teaching that godliness is a means to financial gain. And throughout the Gospels, Jesus reminds us to seek the kingdom of God and His righteousness and all things will be added unto them. There are many needs we have that money can't buy. This includes peace, joy, eternal life, forgiveness, family and friends, and wisdom from God. I'm not saying that God doesn't bless His children financially but we must put first things first.

Throughout the apostle Paul's epistles, you don't see him talk about his financial riches and many houses. Instead in the book of Phillipians he talks about being content in whatever state he's in. He also states that he counts it all rubbish in comparison to knowing Christ. Now that's real prosperity!

We should be careful about prosperity teaching. A minister's message ought to proclaim salvation through Christ, a believer's identity in Christ, and how to grow in grace.

Amen and amen!
Like I have heard for
years, there is THE GOSPEL and then there

I agree absolutely, Thea. One wonders what a minister's motive is in preaching this kind of get-rich-quick Christianity. It wouldn't mean a thing to the pastors in jail in the PRC, or those in Ambon, Philippines--attacked and their houses burned down.
