Warning Against the Adulteress
1 My son, keep my words
and store up my commands within you.
2 Keep my commands and you will live;
guard my teachings as the apple of your eye.
3 Bind them on your fingers;
write them on the tablet of your heart.
My son, keep my words, and store my commands within;
Keep them as the apple of your eye, and you will live, and not sin.
Bind them on your fingers; write them on the tablet of your heart,
Keep them with you always, and from their wisdom never part.
4 Say to wisdom, "You are my sister,"
and call understanding your kinsman;
5 they will keep you from the adulteress,
from the wayward wife with her seductive words.
Treat wisdom as your sister, and understanding as your best friend,
For without their guidance, seductive women will lead you to a dead end.
I see it every day son, and I want to set you straight,
So here is an example of a fate you ought to hate.
6 At the window of my house
I looked out through the lattice.
7 I saw among the simple,
I noticed among the young men,
a youth who lacked judgment.
At the window of my house I open the curtain,
And I see a simple youth that lacks judgment for certain.
8 He was going down the street near her corner,
walking along in the direction of her house
9 at twilight, as the day was fading,
as the dark of night set in.
He is walking down the street as night sets in,
And he is heading for her house with a mind set on sin.
10 Then out came a woman to meet him,
dressed like a prostitute and with crafty intent.
11 (She is loud and defiant,
her feet never stay at home;
12 now in the street, now in the squares,
at every corner she lurks.)
A woman dressed like a prostitute comes out the youth to greet,
And she appeals to him with seductive words soft and sweet.
Ordinarily she is a loud mouth, and full of defiance,
And she is never home giving her family any reliance.
She is here and then there, and everywhere she lurks,
Seeking at every corner some simple minded jerks.
13 She took hold of him and kissed him
and with a brazen face she said:
14 "I have fellowship offerings [a] at home;
today I fulfilled my vows.
15 So I came out to meet you;
I looked for you and have found you!
She grabbed him, kissed him, and with brazen face,
Said, I have a body that is ready, and a prepared place.
I have come out to meet you, and it is you I have found,
And she began to picture in his mind where they were bound.
16 I have covered my bed
with colored linens from Egypt.
17 I have perfumed my bed
with myrrh, aloes and cinnamon.
18 Come, let's drink deep of love till morning;
let's enjoy ourselves with love!
You have never seen anything quite like my bed;
It's covered with the best linens, and perfumed toes to head.
Come let us drink deep of love until morning,
And enjoy love making with all this adorning.
19 My husband is not at home;
he has gone on a long journey.
20 He took his purse filled with money
and will not be home till full moon."
My husband is gone on a journey quite long,
And he will never suspect that we have done wrong.
His business will take a long time, so he will not be here soon,
So we have plenty of time, for it will be at least till full moon.
21 With persuasive words she led him astray;
she seduced him with her smooth talk.
22 All at once he followed her
like an ox going to the slaughter,
like a deer stepping into a noose
Like a simpleton he falls for her smooth introduction
And follows her into the house of seduction.
Like an ox going to the slaughter, he hasn't a clue,
The price for his sin is soon coming due.
Like a deer stepping into a noose,
His life is unraveling, and it is all coming loose.
23 till an arrow pierces his liver,
like a bird darting into a snare,
little knowing it will cost him his life.
His danger is not like a little sliver,
But more like an arrow piercing his liver.
He is like a bird darting into a snare,
And he does it not even aware,
That what he is doing will end in great strife,
And may even bring an end to his life.
24 Now then, my sons, listen to me;
pay attention to what I say.
25 Do not let your heart turn to her ways
or stray into her paths.
Now my son, listen and pay attention to me,
From her path, her house, her ways, from her everything, flee!
Don't be a fool and let your heart turn to her ways,
For you will regret it to the end of your days.
26 Many are the victims she has brought down;
her slain are a mighty throng.
27 Her house is a highway to the grave, [d]
leading down to the chambers of death.
Many are the victims she has brought down;
There is a might throng of them under the ground.
If you go to her house, you will pave,
Your own personal highway to the grave.
