Warnings Against Folly
1 My son, if you have put up security for your neighbor,
if you have struck hands in pledge for another,
2 if you have been trapped by what you said,
ensnared by the words of your mouth,
My son, oh my son, if the following you have done,
You must run to make sure your mistake can be undone.
If you have given money, and have shaken hands in pledge,
Your relationship with your neighbor is on the danger edge.
By your own words you have gotten into a trap,
And you have to get out fast, or you will be thought a sap.
3 then do this, my son, to free yourself,
since you have fallen into your neighbor's hands:
Go and humble yourself;
press your plea with your neighbor!
If you want to be free,
To your neighbor quickly flee.
Humble yourself and press your plea,
And hopefully from his hands he'll set you free.
4 Allow no sleep to your eyes,
no slumber to your eyelids.
5 Free yourself, like a gazelle from the hand of the hunter,
like a bird from the snare of the fowler.
Don't waste any time getting some sleep,
For this is not a matter for a slow moving sheep.
This calls for running in high gear,
With the fleetness of a gazelle or a deer.
Be like a bird escaping from a snare,
Fly away quickly, and get over there.
6 Go to the ant, you sluggard;
consider its ways and be wise!
7 It has no commander,
no overseer or ruler,
8 yet it stores its provisions in summer
and gathers its food at harvest.
Go to the ant, you lazy bum,
And see how much better you should become.
They have no one telling them what to do,
But they don't lay around and in misery stew.
They see a need ahead, and get busy to prepare,
So when harvest time comes they have food to share.
9 How long will you lie there, you sluggard?
When will you get up from your sleep?
10 A little sleep, a little slumber,
a little folding of the hands to rest-
11 and poverty will come on you like a bandit
and scarcity like an armed man.
In contrast to the ant, you just lie in your bed,
You sleep so much you are practically dead.
When will you wake up from your perpetual rest,
And stop being such an agonizing pest.
Poverty like a bandit is swiftly closing in,
And scarcity is all you will harvest for your sin.
12 A scoundrel and villain,
who goes about with a corrupt mouth,
13 who winks with his eye,
signals with his feet
and motions with his fingers,
A scoundrel and a villain corrupts with his body,
For he deceives people in deals that are shoddy.
Every wink of the eye, or every motion of fingers or feet,
Is a part of his method to swindle and cheat.
14 who plots evil with deceit in his heart—
he always stirs up dissension.
15 Therefore disaster will overtake him in an instant;
he will suddenly be destroyed—without remedy.
He plots continuous evil with deceit in his heart,
And from stirring up dissension he will never depart.
Therefore disaster will strike him without even a glance,
And he will be destroyed with no hope of a second chance.
16 There are six things the LORD hates,
seven that are detestable to him:
17 haughty eyes,
a lying tongue,
hands that shed innocent blood.
18 a heart that devises wicked schemes,
feet that are quick to rush into evil,
19 a false witness who pours out lies
and a man who stirs up dissension among brothers.
There are six things the Lord hates,
And seven on which his spirit grates.
Eyes that are haughty, a tongue that is lying,
And hands that cause the innocent to be dying.
A heart that devises wicked schemes,
And feet that are quick to create evil scenes.
A false witness who pours out lies,
And the troublemaker among brothers who makes it so all peace flies.
Warning Against Adultery
20 My son, keep your father's commands
and do not forsake your mother's teaching.
21 Bind them upon your heart forever;
fasten them around your neck.
Keep your father's commands my son;
From your mother's teaching never run.
Bind them forever upon your heart;
Fasten them around your neck like art.
22 When you walk, they will guide you;
when you sleep, they will watch over you;
when you awake, they will speak to you.
23 For these commands are a lamp,
this teaching is a light,
and the corrections of discipline
are the way to life,
They will guide when you walk;
When you sleep, they will stalk,
And when you wake, they will talk,
For these commands are a lamp to light your way;
The corrections of discipline will keep you from going astray.
24 keeping you from the immoral woman,
from the smooth tongue of the wayward wife.
25 Do not lust in your heart after her beauty
or let her captivate you with her eyes,
This guidance will from the immoral wayward wife
Keep you from swallowing her smooth words that will swallow your life.
Do not lust in your heart after her beauty,
Or let her captivate with her eyes so you forget you duty.
26 for the prostitute reduces you to a loaf of bread,
and the adulteress preys upon your very life.
27 Can a man scoop fire into his lap
without his clothes being burned?
The prostitute reduces you to nothing but a simple meal,
And the adulteress reduces you to nothing but a heel.
There is a fact of life that is universally learned,
You can't play with fire and not get burned.
28 Can a man walk on hot coals
without his feet being scorched?
29 So is he who sleeps with another man's wife;
no one who touches her will go unpunished.
You can't walk on hot coals and not burn your feet,
And you can't sleep with another man's wife and escape defeat.
30 Men do not despise a thief if he steals
to satisfy his hunger when he is starving.
31 Yet if he is caught, he must pay sevenfold,
though it costs him all the wealth of his house.
When a man steals because he is starving, men will not despise,
But if caught, he must pay the full penalty of guilt in the law's eyes,
Even if all of his wealth is the final cost;
His folly will lead to this extreme of everything lost.
32 But a man who commits adultery lacks judgment;
whoever does so destroys himself.
33 Blows and disgrace are his lot,
and his shame will never be wiped away;
The man who commits adultery lacks a good head,
For when he is through with himself he would be better off dead.
He destroys himself, and other will add blows, and he will live in disgrace,
And his shame will never be wiped from his name and his face.
34 for jealousy arouses a husband's fury,
and he will show no mercy when he takes revenge.
35 He will not accept any compensation;
he will refuse the bribe, however great it is.
The jealous husband will in a fury fly off the hinge,
And show no mercy when he seeks his revenge.
You might offer plenty of money, but he will not buy it,
So when tempted, think of this angry man, and don't try it.
