Who Do You Say That I Am?

Everyone recognizes that Jesus was an important person in history, and many like His Golden Rule and the Sermon on the Mount.  Most of the great religions of the world even feel the need to find a place for him in their belief system. YET Jesus did not come to start a new religion, or get added on to an old one.

The Apostle Peter was the first to realise that Jesus was no ordinary teacher.  When Jesus asked the question, “Who do you say that I am?”  Peter answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the Living God.” (Matthew16:16)  Later, when some followers left because they didn’t like some of the things He taught, Jesus asked His disciples, “Will you leave Me also?’  Peter declared, “BUT LORD, TO WHOM WOULD WE GO? YOU HAVE THE WORDS OF ETERNAL LIFE?”  Peter’s convictions would be sorely tested in the coming days when believing in Jesus became a matter of life and death.  But the resurrection changed everything.

Jesus performed many miracles and deeds of compassion when He walked on the earth, but His main purpose was to save us from our sins and reconcile us to God.  When He overcame DEATH, He brought HOPE to a world preoccupied with its own mortality – an ETERNAL HOPE that looks beyond the uncertainties of this life. This HOPE is freely offered to ALL who put their TRUST in Him.

C S Lewis, who wrote the Narnia books, was an atheist until he decided to take a serious look at the life of Jesus. He came to the following conclusion. Either Jesus is a LIAR, or a LUNATIC, or He truly is the only begotten SON OF GOD. If He is a liar, then He is not a great teacher but a charlatan. If He is a lunatic, then we can’t take him seriously. But if He is who is says He is then we would be wise to follow Him.
Lewis decided to do just that.

C. T. Studd, a rich and promising test cricketer of the last century, once said, “If Jesus Christ be God, and died for me, NO SACCRIFICE can be too great for me to make for Him.”  He dedicated his whole life, and his considerable fortune, to the work of spreading the good news of Jesus in China.  Today, most Christians live outside the Western world, including Africa, Asia, China, South America, and the Middle East – where persecution is far more common.

The first Christians really believed that Jesus was who He said He was, and they were willing to die for it.  Millions have chosen to follow Him since that time.

SO, who do you say Jesus is?
