Luke 10
38 Now it came to pass, as they went, that he entered into a certain village: and a certain woman named Martha received him into her house. 39 And she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus' feet, and heard his word. 40 But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me. 41 And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things: 42 But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.


Often times we find ourselves in the same position as Martha. We involve ourselves in much work in our churches and homes as well as with family and friends. Although we may tell ourselves that it is for the sake of the ministry or that we just want to be a help to someone, we tend to get a little upset when our name isn't mentioned in the "thank you" portion of the program or if someone doesn't constantly and openly praise us for our efforts.

Martha was doing what she thought was important at the time but she failed to recognize the importance of simply enjoying the presence of the Lord. This was an opportunity to sit and learn from Him. To be blessed by His presence. Many of us volunteer our services and then want all eyes to be on us. By doing this we have already received a temporary and vain glory. We become weighted down by self-inflicted stress because we become "Busy Bees" in the ministry. It is important to know when to sit down and be still to obtain pertinent guidance. If service is needed, the Lord will tell us what to do. We can deplete ourselves causing more harm than good if we aren't focused on the needful things. When we are overwhelmed we cry. "Lord, look at me. No one else is helping me!" What's the motive when we work? Is it to be recognized or to honestly edify the body and glorify God? If it is to glorify the father and edify the church then learning His will is important.

"Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls." (Matthew 11:29-30)

Knowing the heart of Christ is the key to doing the right things at the right time. This can only come when we submit ourselves to Christ and seek wisdom, instruction, direction and clarity from Him. Having zeal is fine but having the Word is better.
