I King 19:5-8

And as he lay an slept under a juniper tree,behold, then an angel touched him, and said unto him, Arise and eat. And he looked up and behold there was cake baked on the coals and a cruse of water at his head. And he did eat and drink, and laid him down again. And the angel of the Lord came again the second time,and touched him, and said, Arise and eat; because the journey is too great for thee.
And he arose, and did eat and drink, and went in the strength of that meat forty days and forty nights unto Horeb the mount of God.


There are times when hearts fear because of the impending fate that we think is about to overtake us. In our weakness we choose to flee the things we know and the place of certainty to seek refuge. Elijah was sought out by Jezebel and was on his way to the mount of Horeb. While he rested he was touched by the angel of the Lord and commanded to eat and drink. Elijah, not considering the limitations of his own flesh, ate just enough to satisfy him. But the angel of the Lord commanded that he eat and drink more because the journey was too great.

At the onset of our journey of salvation we are provided the Bread of Life and the living waters of the Holy Spirit to eat and drink thereof. We attend our worship services on Sunday and "eat" just enough to satisfy ourselves and allow the Holy Spirit to work in us enough to wet our whistles. And just as we do after a satisfying dinner, we lay down and fall "spiritually asleep" not recognizing that the one sitting is not enough sustain us even through the week. Once we enter into the routine of life in our homes,at our jobs,etc. we quickly burned off the energy that the Sunday morning sermon provided. By the time Friday comes, we can't recall what we've heard and sometimes we even fall into a defeated state. The forty days and nights(the number 40) represent a generation as with those who failed to see the Promised Land. It represents the time of endurance as with Jesus while tempted of the devil. A time of sustaining as with Noah in the ark. It represents the age of maturity as was Moses when we visited his brethren, the children of Israel.

We must wake up and eat and drink to maintain strength on our journey. We must feast as if we have been starved, as if each opportunity is our last. If we eat the bread of heaven and drink the living waters from the Father then we will have more than physical rest but everlasting rest. We are much too weak and cannot walk the journey alone without fainting. We must arise,eat and drink until we reach the mount of God; Heaven.
