Finally Pilate handed him over to them to be crucified. So the soldiers took charge of Jesus. Carrying his own cross, he went out to the place of the Skull (which in Aramaic is called Golgotha). John 19:16-17 NIV

Jesus needed to feel the burden of carrying the cross to which He would be nailed as the atonement for the sin of all mankind. Yes, it was the intention that He feel this burden on His beaten back even before He would be nailed to the cross. The Heavenly Father spared nothing in providing the perfect sacrifice for the atonement of sin. But it is up to us to accept the wonderful and merciful gift which our Lord has provided for us. Jesus carried the burden of our sin to Calvary and gave up His spirit there for us. Let us never forget all that the Lord has done for us.
