The soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on his head. They clothed him in a purple robe and went up to him again and again, saying, “Hail, king of the Jews!” And they slapped him in the face. John 19:2-3 NIV
So now we have the soldiers involved in the mocking of Jesus. I wonder if they were just showing their disdain for the Jews in general, feeling that if they could mock their king they would be sending a message to all the Jews. Little did they know that they were mocking the King of Kings.
Just more added to the suffering which our Lord endured. And He endured it without cursing, without words back at those who abused Him, except asking the Father to forgive them for what was being done to Him.
