The crowd was more than willing to ask that Barabbas be released to them. He took part in an uprising against the Roman rule over them. So given the opportunity, why would the crowd not have asked that one playing a part in the uprising against the Romans be released to them.
All of this which happened fit into the perfect plan of the Heavenly Father. God, the Son, would go to the cross and bear the burden of all of mankind’s sin. It is up to us to choose the sacrifice which was made on our behalf. Accept and believe in Him!
