So, Pilate thought he had an out to the dilemma that was before him. He knew of the Jewish tradition of the release of a prisoner during the period of the Passover. Pilate thought the crowd would see through the insane idea of the Jewish leaders. He was not aware that the leaders had already coerced the crowd into asking that someone else be released to them.

Nice try Pilate, but no go. That is not part of what the perfect plan of the Heavenly Father was meant to be.
