Pilate then went back inside the palace, summoned Jesus and asked him, “Are you the king of the Jews?” John 18:33 NIV

Pilate wanted to speak to Jesus. The defendant needed to have an opportunity to speak in this “trial”. I believe that to some degree Pilate wanted to see true justice carried out here, and in allowing Jesus to speak with him, the defendant was given a chance to represent himself. Unfortunately for Pilate, the conversation would not go in the manner in which he hoped.

When we speak with Jesus, do we attempt to defend ourselves and our actions, or do we throw ourselves at the feet of the Lord and ask for His mercy and reconciliation? Attempting to defend ourselves for any wrong we have done is worthless. The Lord knows the intent of the heart. We must realize that without Him we are broken. In our weakness lies the Lord’s strength.
