and brought him first to Annas, who was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, the high priest that year. Caiaphas was the one who had advised the Jewish leaders that it would be good if one man died for the people. John 18:13-14 NIV

Why wasn’t Jesus immediately put into prison? In fact, we read nowhere in the gospels of Him being detained in a cell. The religious leaders just wanted to get Him before them so they could go through with their mock trial and find Him guilty that they could have Him killed.

Why was He taken before Annas first? We do not know and it is not really of importance, but maybe the Sanhedrin and Pharisees were still being called together for their mock trial. All we know is that they wanted to make the proceedings quick and have Him killed before someone could do anything for Him. Little did they realize they were just playing a perfect part in the plan of the Heavenly Father.
