That They May Be One As We Are One

I will remain in the world no longer, but they are still in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them by the power of your name, the name you gave me, so that they may be one as we are one. John 17:11 NIV

Jesus is returning to the Father and knows that the disciples, the ones to spread the Truth to the world were going to need protection from the world. What better protection can there be than that provided by God? The disciples needed protection that they remain united in purpose, sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ. Jesus knew that trials would come to these men, that they would be persecuted, yet He prayed that they remain united, one in purpose, and being one in the Father and the Son. Yes, Jesus prayed for the oneness of these men, united with the Heavenly Father and Himself, bringing glory to God through the work they performed. There can be nothing greater than to be One in the Father and the Son. And this is what was our Lord’s prayer to the Father.
