LORD! IT’S NOT READY

I was at church rehearsing the song “Peace in the Midst of the Storm”, my solo for Sunday. The Holy Spirit nudged me to sing “Don’t Be Afraid”.

“Lord, it’s not ready,” I replied with pangs of conscience. I rationalized that both songs contained the same message, just different words, and I continued on with my agenda.

The Holy Spirit nudged me again. I surrendered to the Spirit’s leading and rehearsed “Don’t Be Afraid” numerous times. I left church frustrated because I continued singing slightly off-key in two places. Saturday’s rehearsal didn’t improve. “Lord, I’ve tried. You have to help me tomorrow.”

I stood in front of the congregation and gave my testimony regarding the song selection for the service. With dry mouth, butterflies swirling in my stomach, and heart pounding against my sternum, I sang. My presentation was a carbon copy of the rehearsals. I sat down and whispered, “God, I sang the song you wanted and I’m sorry for not doing it justice.”

While exiting the building, thinking I would never know why God wanted me to sing “Don’t Be Afraid”, I heard my name being yelled, “Anna!” I stopped and turned around to see Sarah hurrying toward me.

“Anna, God told me to find you before you left the building to tell you that I’m the why. I face a situation every day that makes me afraid. I’ve been trying in my own strength to handle the situation and I’m tired. God told me during the song that He will fight for me and to not be afraid. I’m going to repeat those words as I go into and during the situation. Thank you for being obedient to the Lord.”

“Sarah, thank you, even though the song was off-key in a few places.”

“Oh, Anna, you weren’t off-key. It was beautiful.”

God doesn’t require perfection—only our obedience.
