ON MISSION FOR GOD
My morning routine was no different until…
5 a.m.: I rubbed my sleepy eyes, pushed the covers back, and reached over to silence the irritating alarm. I dragged myself out of the bed and drowsily walked into the kitchen. I stood at the sink yawning, filling the teapot with water and put it on the stove. By the time I came back from the bathroom, the water was boiling. I carried my cup of instant coffee to the living room, sat and read the Bible, and prayed. Afterward, I readied my two boys for school and watched them leave on the bus. When I went back to the bedroom to get dressed for work (I was a hospital volunteer), the unexpected message arrived.
While standing in front of the mirror combing my hair, the words “Ye shall be my witness today” shot like a hot-tipped arrow through my busy thoughts and pierced my spirit. I stopped momentarily.
Even though I have come to recognize God’s voice in my life as a quiet, gentle nudge throughout the years, I still analyze just to make sure it’s God speaking. But this time, the boldness, the loudness, and the energy soliciting my spirit left no doubt God was speaking. Nervous and excited at the same time, I wondered what God had in store for me.
En route to the hospital, I maintained focus on the message and knew I would need to keep my eyes and ears open during work. Approximately one hour into work, I entered a patient’s room. The elderly gentleman was sitting in a chair with his back toward me, staring out the window. He was unaware of my presence.
“Good morning,” I said. I walked to him and gently put my hand on his shoulder. He turned his head, looked up into my eyes, and said, “I sure would like to have what church people have.
My heart leaped. This was God’s mission for me today.
“Would you like to talk about your comment?” I asked.
“Yes,” he answered.
Wanting plenty of uninterrupted time to spend with him, I told him I would finish my duties for the other patients and then come back. Approximately two hours later, I went back to his room, sat down beside him and explained the plan of salvation to him. After reading a few scriptures (I always carried a small Bible in my pocket), I held the hand of this 70-year-old man whose cancer had advanced beyond medical intervention and lead him in a sinner’s prayer to receive salvation. We hugged and shed tears of joy. I left the room, never to see the patient again.
The mission God sent me on that day had been fulfilled. The Holy Spirit can put us in touch with someone who needs Him today.
“For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved” (Romans 10:13), and I experienced Mark 1:17: “‘Come, follow me, Jesus said, ‘and I will make you fishers of men’” (NIV).
