Finally A Positive Coronavirus Test

Author’s Note: In light of the emails released implicating Dr. Tony Faux-ci, I am retelling my wife’s experience with contracting coronavirus in March 2020. This is the third and final entry.

We finally got confirmation of what we expected all along. My wife tested positive for coronavirus or COVID-19.

We found out on Monday (March 30), a nearby urgent care was offering COVID-19 tests and so we called for an appointment. Just two hours later we were in the parking lot waiting to be seen. So much for expected long lines. Signs stuck on the door and a sandwich board outside yelled “STOP” to prevent patients from entering the facility prior to calling the advertised number to alert medical staff of their arrival.

We called from the car and let them know we arrived for our appointment.

We learned this particular urgent care was offering COVID-19 tests for the last two weeks! The first urgent care visited exactly two weeks earlier did not know this. Competitors, I guess. The ER visited exactly one week earlier did not know this. Up until this point the only way my wife qualified for COVID-19 testing was hospitalization. Not even my wife’s primary care physician knew this urgent care was offering COVID-19 testing.

After 10 minutes a clinic nurse walked to our car and gave us papers to fill out. My wife went first. Then I followed when she returned from her initial examination.

We did not step inside the clinic.

Instead, I got my first taste of what I feel socialized medicine would look like. We entered a storage pod in the parking lot, ice cold inside and the same clinic nurse, wearing a thin protective gown covering her regular street clothes, worked the makeshift exam room. She did wear a mask. An electronic heater burned inside providing little relief. She took my temperature, blood pressure and blood oxygen level while I answered the coronavirus questions of the symptoms I was experiencing. No. No. No. No. Contrary to my wife who I assumed answered “Yes” as I was not there for her examination.

We both ended back in the car where it was warm and 10 minutes later the clinic nurse returned and called us both back to the cold moving pod. She tested us via a thin swab put up both nostrils. Just like they do the regular flu, I am told. A doctor from inside the clinic entered the pod shortly after and provided a cursory exam. She authorized the coronavirus tests. Well, the swabs were already taken so…

Today (April 1), 48 hours later, we got the results. My wife tested positive for coronavirus, I tested negative. No April Fools’ joke here.

The doctor at the urgent care that provided the testing called with the coronavirus test results. We had so many questions, most she could not answer. She also downplayed the anti-malaria medication being touted as a successful agent against coronavirus. I do not think at this point my wife needs it to survive and overcome coronavirus, but had we asked she would represent the fifth medical personnel in Oregon to deny the use of the widely reported and successful use of hydroxychloroquine to fight coronavirus.

However, the more telling answer was when she read from, I believe, the CDC website, that my wife would no longer need to self-quarantine once seven days passed after the positive coronavirus test result.

That means had she been tested at the ER nine days ago, today she could walk about in public. Follow the math?

And what does that mean for me? I am either immune because my body successfully fought the coronavirus OR this virus is not as contagious as being reported. I have been around my coronavirus wife for more than two weeks and as of Monday I tested negative for COVID-19.

Can I go outside?

Today, nearly three weeks after my wife returned from Denver on a business trip, and developed symptoms two days later, I remain free of coronavirus and its signs.

We believe our trips to Rwanda, Italy and Atlanta did not infect either of us, instead my wife learned, also on Monday (March 30), that someone she came into contact with in Denver has been confirmed with having coronavirus.

We await county officials to call us.

We don’t know what to expect but we have a lot of questions.
