But now, O Jacob, listen to the LORD who created you. O Israel, the one who formed you says, “Do not be afraid, for I have ransomed you. I have called you by name; you are mine. Isaiah 43:1 NLT
"Good to see you, Diane," a member of my Sunday School class says on her way out the door. While I appreciated the thought, my name is Laurie. My sister and I are long-time roommates and go many places together, so it's not uncommon for me to be called "Diane." In fact, sometimes I'll even answer to it!
"Thank you very much for your help, Linda," a customer will say. I tell them, "you're welcome" and don't correct them. But being called the wrong name leaves a little dent on my heart.
But God knows my name. In Isaiah 43:1 God tells me and you, "I have called you by name, you are mine." Wow. Let that thought soak into your heart. It would be shocking and amazing if, at a huge event of thousands of people, the President of the United States would lean into the microphone, and say, "I see my good friend, Laurie Kiel, (Fill in your name here.) is in the audience today. I'm glad you're here." If that would happen, regardless of who was President at the time, my heart would almost stop at the fact that the most powerful person in the Free World knew my name.
But you and I have something far greater. The Creator of the Universe knows us, claims us as His, and has called us by name.
Laurie lives in Tucson, Arizona with her sister Diane and their two adorable shih tzus. Her passion is bringing Biblical characters to life through writing and performing Biblical monologues.
