Do you think people today have a sense of entitlement? Many of us feel as if we deserve to have a good life—free from health issues, family problems, etc. We deserve to be treated with respect. “How dare they treat me that way! What did I ever do to them?” And, of course, others deserve what happens to them. “If they’d made smarter choices, they wouldn’t be sick or they wouldn’t be losing their home. They can’t afford to pay their bills, but they can afford to buy cigarettes (or video games, clothes, or whatever their vice happens to be).”
It begins with how we view ourselves and others. There is a reason why they say that love is blind. We find it easier to overlook the faults of those we love, because we love them. But what would happen if we adopted an attitude of godly love toward everyone? What if we were more kind, patient, and accepted everyone’s annoying little habits?
“Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves in compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience…forgive one another…as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love…Let the peace of Christ rule your hearts…And be thankful.” (Colossians 3:12—15 NIV)
Let’s put things in perspective, how would we feel if others could see every mistake we ever made, all our imperfections, play across a movie screen? Humbling, isn’t it? Would it be easier to overlook the insults from and imperfections of others then?
How would it change our view of self and others?
