Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me. Psalm 51:12 NIV

Joy and happiness. Are they one and the same? I do not believe so. Happiness is something which comes to us through external means, something which happens or something which someone does. Joy though is internal. Yes, someone might notice that you are joyful, but the joy itself is within you. Now think of joy in spiritual terms. Joy is an inner state knowing that you are a child of God, that you belong to God. Joy comes in knowing that we have salvation through Jesus Christ. People say that they have been saved from this and that, but there is really but one true salvation.

So why would we need salvation to be restored to us? Salvation does not need to be restored. The joy we can and do know through our salvation though may need to be restored. Christ did not promise that we would live a life free of trial and tribulations. The world is full of lies and deceit and it is easy to get caught up in it and temporarily lose sight of the joy we have through our salvation. So yes, this joy can at times need to be restored within us.

We also need to have a willing spirit in order to sustain us. Living the life we are called to by our Lord is not easy. Yet it is what we must do. We must be willing to do so. God can provide us with the heart and soul of one who is willing. We need only approach Him in sincerity and ask Him to make our heart and soul that of one who is willing. Ask the Lord to stir the Holy Spirit deep inside you. Know that in Christ you have won. You belong to Him and nothing can defeat you.
