So the chief priests made plans to kill Lazarus as well, for on account of him many of the Jews were going over to Jesus and believing in him. John 12:10-11 NIV

So, now the plans of the Jewish leaders go beyond just wanting to kill Jesus. Now, anyone who causes others to come to believe in Christ were also planned to be killed. Nothing could happen in the eyes of these leaders to take away from their authority over the people on religious matters.

Is today any different? We who believe in Christ and carry His word unto others shall be persecuted in some form. For some it may just be that we are ignored or ridiculed for our belief, but for others its shall be severe persecution and death. There will come a time when our Lord comes to take all believers unto Him. Any left behind who then turn to Him will face persecution that which has not yet been seen in such a massive manner.
