Meeting Of The Sanhedrin

Then the chief priests and the Pharisees called a meeting of the Sanhedrin. “What are we accomplishing?” they asked. “Here is this man performing many signs. If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and then the Romans will come and take away both our temple and our nation.” John 11:47-48 NIV

The Sanhedrin and the Pharisees were acknowledging the fact of the many signs which Jesus performed, yet they were so concerned about the Romans taking away the temple and the nation. Why was there this fear within them? It was there because they could not see beyond the physical world. Their Messiah was going to restore the worldly kingdom to the Israelites. But Jesus was not a king of this world. No, Jesus’ kingdom far surpassed anything of this world. These leaders could not accept that which Christ did as coming from God. Their eyes were too blind to see the truth and their souls had no true spirituality to them.
