The Jewish leaders had failed first in claiming Abraham to be their father, and secondly claiming God Himself to be their father. Jesus had exposed the fallacy in each of those claims. So now they directly attack Him by calling Him a Samaritan and demon possessed. Remember that Jews had nothing to do with Samaritans, so these leaders were insulting Him, claiming that He was an outcast. Then they went so far as to claim that He was demon possessed. What that Jesus said or did would have made any sane person think that He was demon possessed? The leaders needed to find something to discredit the words of this man, and they were failing miserably at every step they took to do so.
