“Have any of the rulers or of the Pharisees believed in him?” John 7:48 NIV
Here the rulers refer not to the Romans but to the Sanhedrin who were responsible to keep false doctrine from being introduced. The concern of the Pharisees was not to know the Truth but to answer to authority. Their minds were so closed to the Truth which Christ revealed. They were so engrossed in their interpretation of God’s law that they could not see beyond it. What is worse is that they tried to force their beliefs upon the multitudes not allowing any freedom of choice.
It is wonderful that Jesus broke the bond caused by the Sanhedrin and Pharisees.
