Finally the temple guards went back to the chief priests and the Pharisees, who asked them, “Why didn’t you bring him in?” “No one ever spoke the way this man does,” the guards replied. John 7:45-46 NIV
The temple guards had not been sent forcefully to arrest Jesus but to bring Him in based upon some technicality of what He might say. The Sanhedrin apparently waited for the return of the guards and they had expected that Jesus would be with them.
The guards had never heard a man speak with such intensity and passion to a crowd before. They were not able to find anything in their minds to warrant bringing Jesus in as they had so been directed. So, for now all the Sanhedrin could do was to further plot the demise of this man.
