Jesus said to them, “I did one miracle, and you are all amazed. Yet, because Moses gave you circumcision (though actually it did not come from Moses, but from the patriarchs), you circumcise a boy on the Sabbath. Now if a boy can be circumcised on the Sabbath so that the law of Moses may not be broken, why are you angry with me for healing a man’s whole body on the Sabbath.” John 7:21-23 NIV

In His previous trip to Jerusalem Jesus had healed the man who could not walk, having him take up His mat and walk. And of course, it had occurred on a Sabbath. The point Jesus makes is that if these people would do work on a Sabbath that a written law might be kept, should that not extend to the law of loving one’s neighbor by helping or healing him as well on the Sabbath?

Of course, those present including the Jewish leaders had no answer for Jesus. They knew that their actions were hypocritical and decided it was best just to remain silent. This did not stop their hatred thinking about Him though.
