Sometime ago I had been given a beautiful suitcase by my nephew and it was to me the best suitcase I have ever head. My wife decided to put her everyday clothes in the suitcase and for several times each day she will open it to get a change of clothing for her and my daughter. Over time the zip started to malfunction and needed to be replaced, and I could not find a suitable replacement for the zip and now we put in old clothing inside and secured the suitcase with an old clothe tied around. It is not suitable for my once-in-a-while travels anymore and I had to get a less beautiful replacement for that. It is so with life and the unfortunate part is that it may not be replaceable in most cases.

Paul begins the Fifth Chapter of the First book of Corinthians by addressing a problem that beset the Corinthian church at the time of the Early Church. This problem related to the work of the Holy Spirit in spreading out the gospel using Paul even to the heathen nations, the converts being required to forsake their sinful ways. One of the most serious of these sins that Paul addressed is sexual immorality especially among believers. Although Paul and others wrote about this immorality, it continues to bedevil practicing Christians, even up to this day and shutting out a lot of our members even up to this day. This write up is meant to cement Paul’s warning to the present church and ensure that as members we do not destroy the bridge that Christ built for us to enter into the Kingdom of Grace.

The first mention of sexual immorality may be found in the same chapter as the first instance of murder. They all occur in the Chapter following the Fall from Grace of the first couple, our forebears. Genesis 4:8 mentions Cain murdering his brother Abel and 11 verses later in Genesis 4:19 Lamech, a descendant of Cain adds to the sin of murder a bizarre tradition that will last to the end of this sinful world, polygamy. Eventually it became an acceptable practice to the world and also the church. In chapter 6 of Genesis, the devil introduces another temptation to the line of Seth (sons of God). The sons of God saw the beauty among the heathen daughters of the line of Cain and took among them wives. The result was an evil generation that required to be eliminated by the flood of Noah in order to restore and maintain the little righteousness.

From Noah to the beginning of the nation of Israel, the devil continued to make wedges into the people of God, even using the progenies of the nation like Abraham, Jacob, Judah and Rueben. Abraham accepts an offer of Hagar as a surrogate wife to forbear Ishmael. Lot, a nephew of Abraham was made drunk by his own daughters in order to immorally bring to life the two nations of Moabites and Ammonites after the Lord burnt down Sodom and Gomorrah for perversions that we see in our current times. Jacob’ polygamous marriage brought him more pain that almost led him to the grave without seeing his son, Joseph, for a long time.

Sexual immorality is still a present problem that still haunts the church even in the present days. It comes in all forms and while other forms are violent and may not seem to be accept table by most church members, the other type is the most dangerous especially to a Christian whose aim is to be saved through the Grace of Christ. This type allows the Christian to live in it and become comfortable and if it becomes common among Christians, it ceases to be viewed as such. Many of us, Christians, are easily led out of the Kingdom because of our comfortably living in sin.

In conclusion Paul in Hebrews 12:1 urges us to “…. lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us.” The constant use of zip makes it lose its usefulness, so ensure you use the zip sparingly and only when necessary. Sexual immorality is a sin which we should shun as Christians. Shunning it will help us to be like Christ, our Redeemer and also to qualify to be saved from this sinful world to the promised Heavenly bliss.
